Yesterday I was invited to attend a reception at the British high commission where I might be the only one from a science background. There are students from sociology, political science, and finance who were a part of the global forum but none from basic science. As the concerned affairs come under the interest of humanities and that is why science is out of context. But why can’t a science grad be a part of such events and explore the world? After the reception, I googled and found the word, science diplomats. Until that time and date, I have pictured science and diplomacy in two different books but after that, it seems like they can co-exist. Forum for Indian Science Diplomacy (FISD) is one such organization working in this regard to bring the issues related to science, technology, innovation, and international affairs to strengthen STEM. It provides the platform to understand science diplomacy in foreign policy and leverage science and technology in the respective countries. So why can’t we be science diplomats?

The reason is awareness, where we alack a lot. If I go out and ask how many science grads know this term then 90% of them will be hearing for the very first time, for sure. As a physics student, I spent a lot of time either with books or in labs. I do like physics a lot but in the end, I am not making much of a positive contribution to society. Although my contribution does count in terms of research, most of the ideas related to advancement in science rest inside the wall. What if my knowledge passes the lab wall and benefits a larger audience? It's not about sharing the subject knowledge rather discussing policies to bring change. I am pretty much convinced that science is a great tool to empower people and improve the world which is why I am doing a Ph.D. I want all the science grads out there to feel the same and explore various opportunities. I will be there to help, guide, and motivate you all.
